Adult attractiveness and oviposition preference of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) B-biotype in cotton genotypes Scientia Agricola

The silverleaf whitefly Bemisia tabaci B-biotype is an important pest of cotton; it affects plant vigour, transmits geminivirus and reduces lint quality. In order to evaluate the resistance of cotton genotypes, Gossypium hirsutum (L.), to the whitefly Bemisia tabaci B-biotype, both free-choice and no-choice attractiveness and non-preference for oviposition tests were carried out in a shade house, at room temperature. Low attractiveness to adults of this whitefly was observed for plants of genotypes Fabrika, CNPA Ita 90, Makina, Coodetec 407, and IAC 01-639 CPA 02-24, which may represent a resistance component of these genetic materials to the insect. Since it was first reported in Brazil in the 1990s, the B biotype of silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Genn., Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) has been recognized as an important pest in soybeans (Glycine max L.), reducing the productivity of this legume species in some areas of the country. As an alternative to chemical control, the use of resistant genotypes represents an important tool for integrated pest management (IPM). The silverleaf whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B-biotype (= B. argentifolii) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is a polyphagous insect attacking many plant species of economic importance. A comparison study was conducted on the duration of the egg-to-adult period, and the percentage of hatching eggs of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B-biotype on collard (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala D.C.), soybean(Glycine max (L.) Merr.) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants, as well as the egg-to-adult period of Encarsia formosa (Gahan) on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th whitefly nymphal instars on these three plant species. Caracterização molecular e divergência genética de Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) em diferentes culturas e locais de cultivo Neotropical Entomology

Knowledge on the genetic variation of populations of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) can improve the understanding of genetic diversity found in their biotypes and, consequently, offer guidelines for its management. In this study, the molecular characterization was performed and genetic diversity data were obtained for this insect from three regions of Brazil on different crops [cotton and soybean (Mato Grosso - MT); cabbage (Distrito Federal - DF); soybean and potato (São Paulo - SP)], using RAPD markers. RAPD analysis indicated 80.6% polymorphic loci and the average genetic similarity obtained by the Jaccard coefficient was 0.67. The first observations on the presence of Bemisia tabaci biotype B (=B. argentifolii) in Brazil were made in the beginning of the 1990s in the State of São Paulo. from then on, that whitefly has spread out to other States. This work was carried out in order to identify Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotypes present in the state of Paraná and to determine their geographical distribution and host plants. About 50 adults were collected in several host crops, weeds and ornamental plants in North, Northwest, Northeast, West and Central areas of the state, from January to May, 1998 and 1999. The species were identified by means of RAPD-PCR, using the primer Operon H-16. The B-strain of Bemisia tabaci Gennadius is a key pest of several crops and chemical control is the main control method used by growers, although reduction in efficacy due to insecticide resistance has already been reported. The aim of this work was to investigate the insecticidal effect of an array of synthetic sucrose esters with the aliphatic and aromatic groups on whitefly adults. Sucrose butyrate, caprate, octanoate, palmitate, oleate, octaacetate, phthalate, benzoate, and sucrose diacetate hexaisobutyrate were tested. Occurrence of Eretmocerus mundus Mercet (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) parasitizing Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotype B (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in Brazil Bragantia

The parasitism of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotype B nymphs on cotton plants was observed during a research on resistance of cotton genotypes to this whitefly. The experiment was set in a greenhouse at the Experimental Station of the Instituto Agronômico (IAC), in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil. Samples of the parasitized nymphs were collected and maintained in laboratory to monitor the parasitism and obtain the adult parasitoids. A total of 129 adult parasitoids were obtained, including one Encarsia inaron (Walker), 13 En. lutea (Masi), and 115 Eretmocerus mundus Mercet (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae). This is the first report of Er. mundus in Brazil.

Resistance of melon cultivars to Bemisia tabaci biotype B Horticultura Brasileira

The silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci biotype B, is currently one of the most important pests of melon, causing direct and indirect damage to plants, and significantly reducing production in the field. Due to the need for alternative methods of chemical control in melon crops, the melon cultivars AF-646, AF-682, Don Luis, Frevo, Jangada, Nilo, Vereda, Amarelo Ouro and Hales Best were assessed at field, greenhouse, and laboratory trials for resistance to whitefly B. tabaci biotype B. In general, 'Hales Best' and 'Amarelo Ouro' were the most resistant, showing oviposition non-preference against whitefly.
